Argentine Tango Boot Camp – An immersion process in learning the structure of Tango Milonguero

A Milonguero boot camp for Milonguero style Argentine Tango!

  1. The Frame, The Posture and The Walking
    • These elements can’t be cheated so we will build you from the your feet to your head in such a fashion that by the end of this class – reinforced of course by all consecutive classes – your body will remember and know the posture you MUST dance from.
  2. Moving With of Your Partner – Not moving Your Partner
    • By being aware of our partner before you take step, we will set the stage for your dancing to grow faster because you cannot move without your partner – neither of you!
  3. Walking with Music in Your Body
    • Making the walk a part of the music early in the learning process is vital to a good foundation. We will show, demonstrate and teach you some basic musical movements that are easy, fun and an actual part of the music itself.
  4. Simple and Musical is Better!
    • By feeling the rhythms of the music in simple steps you can lay a concrete foundation to how you begin to move with your parter for the rest of your tango learning process.
  5. Some Steps to Rely On
    • Tango is difficult enough without overwhelming you when you are beginning to get the foundation into your muscle memory. Here is where you will learn some challenging but not distracting steps to move you around the floor with your partner.

The basics for tango milonguero are the foundation for tango movements. If you have this foundation firmly under your shoes, you can begin to expand your repertoire and musicality. Practice practice practice!

Growing in Tango

By rusty, February 22, 2010

I was recently asked what I thought about a new student coming to and advanced class and this was my answer:
The process reminds me of math – and though I never got higher than geometry and basic calculus, it is similar in that it is a build of component understandings and functions. If you can master algebra a lot other math components fall into place, if however you never quite get a+b=c then you will struggle with even a simple x,y axis equation much less curves or algorithms.

In the end tango is seeing clearly your body in relation to itself, gravity, time and space and then its juxtaposition and relationship to your partner’s discreet state in relations again to time and space. When you accomplish the forward lean and walk, you will be amazed how many movements and steps suddenly open up to you. It may even seem at times that progress ceases then, a light goes on and twelve steps all fall into place at once.

  1. First you see you and fully observe your own position clearly; all the way to the discrete state of your being, recognizing all parts of your body and its appendages as you flow through space and time with the music.
  2. Then you see your partner and respect and observe her position in its discreet state and movement all through and during movements.

These juxtapositional elements are quite complex; the dynamic relationship that we have with each other, the music, the floor, the crowd and time and space are staggering. Actually it is quite amazing that we have brains that can make these computations so easily – and here is the key word: after – after we have the muscle memory and know exactly what our own body is doing, everything gets easier.

Take heart here. There are folks in the Tuesday class that have been dancing 5 to 10 years. Tango is a slow burn. Lots of reinforcement and lots of practice. I have seen lots of instructors try but I have yet to see anyone come close to creating a short cut to tango :)

Tango is a journey that will  last you a life time. There is no destination and there is no hurry. Take your time, learn a good foundation but most of all do not become discouraged!

Love Light & Gratitude,
Rusty

Rock Step Pivots 101

As you perfect the 90 degree pivot, the 180 pivot becomes more accesible and after you perfect the 180 the 360 will begin to awaken to your body as always the key is to… PRACTICE until you are bored with the step and then practice some more.

Review Jay Abling Workshop – T’ai Chi Tango

By rusty, February 1, 2010

Greetings Friends,

Thanks to all that came out for the milonguita on Friday so much fun, wow! And thanks to TTS for hosting Jay at the milonga on Saturday. Great times by all there!

This was a very joyful weekend for all that participated in Jay’s workshop. So many clear, provocative and insightful moments. Not to mention the camaraderie and community bonding.

We will be reviewing the t’ai chi approach on Tuesday night:
“Deep technique in leading & following pivots. What does it mean to be grounded?” – so whether you could make the workshop or not come out and add some depth to your tango perspective by enhancing your balance and grounding!

Get some rest and shine your shoes… the festival is in 4 weeks!!!

With Love & Light,
Rusty
Love is the rhythm
You are the music
Life is the dance.
