When I first started tango, YouTube wasn’t around. It didn’t show up for a number of years. Now YouTube is filled with tango. Some beautiful with fabulous technique and some is not so pretty. How does one know what to watch? Whatever and whomever you watch affects the way you dance. You mind is always trying to align yourself with what you admire.
Jo and I did a teaching tour in Australia in 2009 where we were out back in small burgeoning communities without very many nice dancers to watch. We noticed our dance slipped while we were away from our good influences and surrounded by good dancing. This taught us to watch some YouTUbe dances when we find ourselves isolated so we keep our inner eye aligned with who we are and want to be.
Here is a video that I use a lot in classes to show ladies how to articulate the feet for adornments and steps in tango. This is Sebastian Jimenez and Maria Ines Bogado immediately after they won the Mundial Competition in Buenos Aires (the only competition that really matters since it is sponsored by the ministry of art in BA) Notice her footwork is perfectly organic. The feet are ergonomically doing what feet should do, heel leads for large steps, toe leads for shorter or rounder steps. It is all here. The question is can you see it? If not, let me teach you how…
