Taking classes in Spanish when you are not fluent is a trip. “Hombres blah sobre blah blah ochos. Mujeres blah blah extensiones blah blah molinete. Y blah blah blah giro.” It forces one to really pay attention to the body language. And I have learned so much taking these classes all in español.
But… in the end… isn’t that is what tango is all about? Body language. We speak with the body. We communicate our intentions and we interpret based on body language. For me tango is the ultimate body language.
Perhaps you should try taking a class from your favorite teacher wearing ear plugs.
The last class we taught in 2009 was a non-spoken tango class, I never uttered a word and it was interesting how every one would gathered around and confer with one another trying to decipher what I was trying to convey. In the end it caused everyone to pay much more attention than usual, and that in itself catalyzed getting more from the class than usual.
This cinches it. We will do another non-verbal class upon our return. I want you all to experience what we are experiencing here taking classes and not knowing all that is being said. Stay tuned!
