The ABCs of Tango
We Use the Susanna Miller Method and Foundation

  • A) Our beginning curriculum is 16 classes, four in 4-week cycles (Milonguero 101)
  • B) Take these courses in ANY order, or simultaneously. E.g., Parallel System 101 – Cross System 101 – Rhythms 101 – Turns 101
  • C) Begin by taking any 101 class and begin and continue to take 101-level classes for some weeks then pick up the second slot and do an hour an a half, then in a few months you can take all four and eventually graduate to get the first class free**.
  • All classes reinforce the embrace, the frame and the critical all important posture of the milonguero. The steps are carefully chosen and with some practice they are easy to master.

Enroll Now Group Classes are $10 each - sign up for all 16 and get 1 free Private Lesson.

**In Addition Read This You Might Qualify for FREE Classes:
If you have been studying tango for more than 6 months the first slot is free for your review, 12 months the second slot is free, 18 months or more 3 slots free, and at two years of study the entire evening is free for your review.
It is professionally recommended that 25% of your tango study be comprised of a reintegration of the fundamentals and foundational techniques. The milonguero foundation is what lies beneath all styles of tango. As you grow and change in your style and awareness, revisit the basics to reintegrate the proper foundation into each of your styles.
The reasoning here is three fold:

    1. You need to review your foundation once you begin dancing to shake off bad habits that appear as you integrate – so incorporate 25% of your study and review to basics! (50% should be milongas and practicas and another 25% should be taxing your abilities to expand your horizons as in the last 30 minutes of this class or our Tuesday night class).
    2. It is free to you because we want you to grow and you will be an asset to the class since you have used and seen the techniques before.
    3. In this way we can keep our tango community integrated and bridge any divisions or misunderstandings about the absolute basics.

It is common that beginners misinterpret foundational techniques and later get confused by different approaches in different instructors. All you need do is look at the community to see who is dancing with the community, then you will find what works for you. In the end we are all dancing tango, so this will help clean up your foundation; as you learn it always gets a bit muddy :)

We look forward to sharing this fabulous method of teaching and learning with you all! See you soon!!

We will walk you (all puns intended) through some the most famous and widely danced fuguras in Argentine tango world wide. Once you know these basic figuras you can dance tango anywhere on the planet as you enter the:
    Intermediate Tango

    • Forward Ochos – Many variations and alterations and resolutions
    • Backward Ochos – This is not just the retro version of back ochos there are variations and alterations of from ochitas to ganchitas
    • Ocho Cortado – Also called Ocho Milonguero – This is the building block of a scores of variations on a common theme
    • Left Turn, Media Vuelta – The turn that teaches you to turn your partner without the leader stepping
    • Gyro / Molinete – All folk dances use a variation on this circular theme of grapevine
    • Sacadas – Simple sacadas that do not disrupt the line of dance or shake up your partner all within the milonguero embrace and style of tango
    • Pivots and Intermediate Level Turns and Rock Steps

From the basics all the way to advanced tango will satisfy you while challenging you for years to come. Milongueros of 50 years are known for saying: “You know, I think in this past ten years, my walking has improved a great deal.”

    More Advanced Classes
    Tuesday 7:30 – 9:00 PM – Class-tica Musica
    $10 each or 4 for $35
    AZ Ballet Theatre
    2512 E. 6th St.
    Tucson, AZ 85716
We are proud to announce a well thought out and planned: Class-tica Musical
This will be based on an honest but loving self-appraisal of how you are dancing and what it will take you to improve and grow. We will help you to learn and understand:

    How to self appraise.
    How to help your partner.
How to get out of the way and allow your partner to help you.
How to change your dancing now, not later.

    Practicas

Two to three times a month we have a Milonguita/Practica (See the Calendar) where we don’t have to abide by the strict codigos of the Milonga but we maintain the structure of tandas, line of dance, floor craft (an introductory course in floor navigation is learned at the Milonguita)

    Workshops

Every few months fly traveling instructors/performers/community builders into town so you can stay on par with the rest of the world. It is important for you to know what is going on outside of Tucson – you never know you might want to dance some tango while you are on vacation (or better yet, make tango your vacation).

    Tucson Tango Festival

Here is where you get an international look at tango. Over 400 regular people just like you come from all over the US, Argentina and even Europe come to the Tucson Tango Festival to dance tango with their friends and local tango dancers. This is what it is all about. Not competing as ballroom dancing does, but rather actually dancing with a person you have never met and having it work. It is the ultimate joy in your tango experience.

Between everything we offer you can absolutely learn to tango with Jo & Rusty in Tucson, Arizona!
